Updating your iPad application

We've been contacted multiple times by our customers for a guide on how to update their apps. So here's an overview of what you should do and what you should really look out for.

So when would you want to update your application ?

Well in fact there may be multiple reasons for updating your application.

For instance, you released your single-issue app and there is a major spelling mistake on the first page or the link to your website doesn't work.
Or you want to use an awesome new feature of a new Twixl Publisher version.
But in most cases you'll probably want to update your application because you have an update of your publication, like a new issue of your magazine if you have a Single Issue App.
Or Apple may have rejected your application for whatever reason.

If your updating your application for a reason other that Apple rejecting your application, these are the steps to take.
  1. First you want to open up the builder and select "build", using the same build setting you used for uploading your app previously.
  2. You bump up the version number. From 1.0 to 1.1 or from 1.0 to 2.0 whatever you like, it just needs to be higher than the previous version number. Keep this number close by as you will need it when adding the new version inside iTunes Connect.
  3. Create a new version in iTunes Connect: go through the different steps. The most important part here is to define the same version number as the one you used in the builder! This will be checked by Apple and if the version numbers don't match, you'll have to create a new build with the correct version and re-upload your *.ipa file.
  4. "Ready to upload binary": you are now ready to upload you binary (*.ipa file) so you can click on "ready to upload binary". Make sure you do this only when you're completely certain your settings of the new version are complete and correct!
  5. Open the "Application Loader" on your computer and log-in to your iTunes Connect account
  6. Select your new *.ipa file and upload your application
  7. The status of your version inside iTunes Connect will change from "Waiting for binary" to "Received binary", then later to "Waiting for review."
  8. Once Apple goes ahead and reviews your application the status will change to "In review"
  9. Depending on what Apple decides your application will get the Status "Ready for sale" or "Rejected" (If your app doesn't show up immediately after approval don't worry, within 24 hours that problem will have resolved itself)
What to do when your app gets rejected? Fix the problem, obviously, but what then?
  1. Create a new application with the Twixl Publisher builder, with the same build setting.
  2. Be sure to NOT bump the version number, it has to be the same as the version that was rejected.
  3. Change the settings in iTunes connect if needed. Sometimes Apple will reject your metadata.
  4. Click on "Ready to upload binary"
  5. Open the "Application Loader" on your computer and log-in
  6. Select the new *.ipa file and upload your application
  7. The status of your version inside iTunes Connect will change from "Waiting for binary" to "Received binary", then again to "Waiting for review."
  8. Once Apple goes ahead and reviews your app the status will change to "In review"
  9. Depending on what Apple decides your app will get the Status "Ready for sale" or "Rejected" (If your app doesn't show up immediately after approval don't worry, within 24 hours that problem will have resolved itself)

Multi-issue Applications

Multi-issue apps have an advantage over the single-issue apps, because you don't need to update your application if you have a new version of a publication.
Just go to the Twixl Distribution Platform and upload your new issue for the issue you've already created.

You will have to update your multi-issue app if you have created a publication with a new feature or a higher version of Twixl Publisher than the version of Twixl Publisher you used to create your app.
